Diary of the First All Friends Conference, London, 1920 [manuscript] / Geo. A. Selleck.

The diary begins in Kansas en route to London. Observant and detailed, telling of features of landscape (with descriptions of some cities & rivers) and, on boarding boat, recounts that there are "Lots of good Quaker women on second deck," food, weather, games. Aug. 10, he disembarks in England and tells of trip to Stratford-upon-Avon, meets more Quaker women. Reports on all activities, where he stayed, people he met, etc. Heard Rufus Jones speak on "Conscience" in London. Attends Meeting and session on League of Nations. Again attended Meeting and heard discussion of race relations. Many other Meetings described or mentioned. Visited George Fox's grave. Sightseeing details, playing games. Went to Friends War Victims Relief Office (Aug. 21). Visited other places in England, Holland, France. Describes trip back to Kansas in time to begin school. Much data re. trip at end, including names of Quakers on his boat (including Clarence Pickett) and some addresses, including Clyde Milner's.

Clarence Pickett (1884-1965) was a prominent Friend. The executive secretary of the American Friends Service Committee from 1929 to 1950, he was influential in governmental and international circles as well. He served as an advisor to Presidents Hoover, Roosevelt, Truman and Kennedy. George Arthur Selleck (1899-1980) was a birthright Quaker, son of Guy B. and Cora Gain Selleck. He m. 1 Florence M. Gifford in 1925 and m. 2 Daisy Newman in 1978. Selleck was educated at Friends University (B.A., 1921), Hartford Theological Seminary (S.T.B., ca. 1926) and Harvard (M.A., ca. 1932).
